Red Bull Ultra Natural

2013 is upon us and the Red Bull signature series is unleashing 16 of the best in big mountain snowboarding again this year at Baldface Lodge in British Columbia on Feb. 15-21. We'll get to see an updated course, with countless new features and options, along with a new name 'Red Bull Ultra Natural'.

The event has been created to crown the world's best in big mountain snowboarding and this year, now that riders have a general idea of what to expect, it's an even bigger anticipation to see what the 16 riders can unleash. However there is a small problem. Last year, we saw event creator and designer Travis Rice take home first place in Red Bull Supernatural and this caused quite a stir among fans of this new competition. The idea that the one who envisioned the course, designed the layout as well as man made features, who helped construct it, who tweaked it after completion, as well as had months to learn every natural feature and option was allowed to compete for the trophy and prize money seems more than a bit unfair.

Travis Rice is considered to be the best of snowboarding and his talent is not to be doubted, but in this case he undoubtedly had an unfair advantage over the other riders and will again this year. This is why many feel, and what some have become vocal about to Red Bull, that Travis Rice should not be allowed to compete in Ultra Natural.

Watching last year's Supernatural with no prior knowledge to the outcome, there was very little doubt who the winner would be and its not hard to understand why. From speaking about designing and envisioning each feature, to his seemingly rehearsed post first run interview, many knew he'd walk away with the prize....and not because of his amazing talent.

It may not be of consequence to some if he does compete or not. When asked, Red Bull signature Series had said simply "The more shredding the better." While seeing these riders get the most out of Ultra Natural and watching themselves push their athletic abilities is a huge part of why we watch, we as the fans also enjoy the true competition. Unfortunately as this writer has seen, it doesn't seem that part is included or cared about. I'm sure each rider is proud to have even competed in Supernatural and soon Ultra Natural, but how do they feel about the unfair competition when it comes to the $75, 000 prize and title of best big mountain snowboarder in the world?

Red Bull and Travis Rice should have more integrity than this. He should host and perform an honour run, but he should not be scored or in the running for the prize or title. Come on Red Bull, make it fair and take Travis Rice out of the competition, keep the integrity of snowboarding intact.

Needless to say this will be one worth watching regardless. Be sure to tune in on NBC on March 30th, 1:30pm ET or 10:30am PT to watch Red Bull Ultra Natural
